After 3 days in a 4x4 we arrived at Erta Ale in the Afar region in Ethiopia. The roads were described as some of the worst in the world. I would like to challenge that and claim that you couldn't call them roads. The volcano welcomed me by sending a cloud of sulphuric gases down over the group. We quickly scattered by instinct. I imagine that's how it feels when you get mazed. Sadly I learned that only 2 weeks after my visit 4 tourists and 1 Ethiopean policeman were killed at this very spot. Supposedly by gunmen from Eritrea.
