Ministry in a Multicultural World: Beyond Borders Some Chicano kids, Mexican-American kids, are talking as if they were part of another culture or looking as if they were part of another culture. I do not see that as something intrinsically bad, that they take on characteristics of other cultures. After all, that is what mestizaje is about. However, they are doing so out of a place of not knowing who they are. That makes a big difference. They do not know about their own people's experience, historically and culturally. It is important to know who we are as a people, who our heroes are, what our religion is like and what are our expressions of religion and spirituality. Reclaiming external aspects of our culture like Tejano music, ways of dressing, ways of dancing and foods, represents just the tip of the iceberg of who we are in our culture. Fortunately, many kids are beginning to reclaim who they are at a much deeper level, rediscovering the communal nature of who we are. They are reclaiming, at the level of our spirituality, the values that we hold as a people and that come to us from our grandparents. For example, they are redefining what "respeto" respect is, one of the values that we hold. These values are greatly needed in our modern society. END Copyright MACC and JM 2001
