PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea - The lifeguards rescued 238 survivors in the sea off the east coast of Papua New Guinea after it sank on Thursday a ferry with 350 people aboard, authorities said. A plane in Australia, three helicopters and six vessels through the region where the ferry capsized MV Queen Rabaul bound from Kimbe on the island of New Britain, to the coastal town of Lae, on the main island, said the Australian Authority Maritime security in a statement.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the wreck as a "major tragedy" and said his country facilitated assistance to its neighbor. "Due to the high potential loss of life here, I think when this news reached the attention of Australians in the country they think of the people of Papua New Guinea while responding to the tragedy," he said. The Australian Maritime Agency detected the shuttle's distress call and alerted the Rescue Coordination Centre Maritime Papua New Guinea, which coordinates rescue efforts. The Maritime Safety Agency of Australia estimated that 350 people were on the ship, but the coordinator of the rescue of the National Maritime Safety Authority of Papua New Guinea, Captain Nurur Rahman, said the true figure is probably lower."I can not confirm or deny the figure of 350 missing. Are rumors," said Rahman. "I have not seen the cargo manifest yet, but possibly around 300 people." "The dynamics of this tragedy changes all the time, minute by minute," he said. The ferry operator, Star Ships, was not immediately available for comment on what happened. Rahman said so far no bodies have been found.
